If you like playing, singing, dancing, and transforming public space into an incredible party, this may be for you. Our musical aesthetic is inspired by the Honk Fest movement. Our political philosophies align with antifa, intersectional feminism, Black Lives Matter, Occupy, and such.
Skills needed
- We are primarily in need of percussion and marching band winds and brass (particularly tuba or sousaphone).
Musical skills
-The ability and inclination to learn and practice music by studying charts and recordings on your own before playing at rehearsal. We use rehearsal time to solidify the groove, put on the finishing touches and work on choreography. People with ensemble experience and at least a couple years of practice on their instrument will be the best fit.
Community skills
- A genuine interest and commitment to good group process. Honoring agreements, giving and receiving feedback, listening actively, speaking with compassion, and helping each other have non-oppressive language and behaviors. Our interactions with each other are part of our work toward a more socially just society.

Rehearsals
--2020 update-- Rehearsals are outdoors.
We usually rehearse twice a month. The schedule is irregular, but we set the dates at least a couple weeks ahead of time and try to accommodate everyone's schedules the best we can.
Are kids welcome at rehearsal?
In most cases yes!
Gigs
We play gigs to the extent that our collective time and energy and inclination allow.
Money
A portion of gig money goes into the band fund (equipment, printing, etc.) and a portion goes directly to band members. We also play for free sometimes, particularly at rallies and other political actions.
Joining process
We look forward to meeting you!
1) Please write to us at
hearticorn [at] gmail [punto] com
Ask us any questions.
2) We'll send you a link to our Google Drive folder of charts and recordings. Pick two songs you'd like to play with us at rehearsal.
3) Come to two rehearsals, and we can all meet each other and play. We'll start rehearsal with the two songs you picked, so you can leave early if you want. We know your time is valuable.
4) We'll talk amongst ourselves, and either invite you to join, or say thank you but it's not a good fit. Meanwhile, you've had time to think about whether you think it's a good fit.
Rest assured, we really want more band members, so if you have basic ensemble skills and seem like a nice person, you'll probably get the invite.
Who am I writing to?
You are writing to our director Ash!

"Y u no include everybody???? ლ(ಠ益ಠლ)"
While radical, we are not radically inclusive. Frankly, most organizations aren’t. We aim to be honest and upfront about the ways we’re exclusive.
For anyone, finding a band that's a good fit is a bit of a process. You have to find people with similar musical interests and skill levels and a rehearsal schedule that works.
Now, on top of that, women and visibly non-cis people have some or all of these things to consider:
- Will I be the only woman/queer person in the band, thus standing out as "the girl in the band" or “the queer one”?
- Will I face misogyny, either outright or "jokingly"? Examples include being interrupted a lot during band discussions, dealing with "jokes" or insensitive language about women and queer people, or being judged by a double standard for having strong opinions. ಠ_ಠ
If you are a cis guy, you are not in particular need of the space we are creating. It's nothing personal. There are lots of other fun local community bands and choirs to choose from. Do an internet search or ask your musician friends for a recommendation.
